Overcoming an Eating Disorder so I can Enjoy Sweets & Train to my Full potential
My journey started in my sophomore year of high school when I joined my high school cross country team. I quickly fell in love with the sport and thought I would become the best by controlling my nutrition and eating as healthy as possible. The first steps were gradual, I cut back on higher-fat cuts of meat and sugary chocolates. But over time, I began counting calories and started labeling food as “BAD” if it contained too many, or included sugars and fats. I became critical of myself and thought that eating healthy low calorie foods was the only way to achieve my goals – and that also meant NO SWEETS EVER.
At first, my plan was working; I was cutting weight, getting faster, and felt like I was headed in the right direction. I would run as hard as I could every day on an empty stomach because I thought it would help me train and increase my mental toughness. Even when I won races and invitationals, I refused to enjoy the sweet treats I grew up loving and treating myself with. I had set my standards so high, that my eating disorder became fully in control and starving myself became a habit. The joy of enjoying savory sweets was completely ripped out of my life.
After years of this, I learned the hard way that it was not sustainable. I began developing numerous negative health effects because my diet didn’t support my training. Various injuries began to hold me out of competitions and with these injuries came the disappointment of not reaching my goals and sitting out on a lot of meets I could have performed at. It took a long time for me to recover, and learn what healthy eating looks like for a dedicated athlete.
Healthy eating is all about balance, moderation and not any restriction. I allow myself to enjoy a variety of foods, and even end each night with a small dessert. I feel my absolute best eating my sweet treats, then hammering runs and workouts! These sweets are fueling my athletic success and allowing me to stay injury free and HAPPY!
